Anyone know how to re-grow hair on a cat?

I have a brown tabby cat named Cade. A few months ago, a hawk tried to pick him up and dug a claw into his side. He had a huge gash on his hip so the vet shaved that side of him and sewed him up. He only lived because it was so cold out here that he didn't bleed to death. Now, it's been a few months, and none of the hair has grown back. I'm only worried because we live in Michigan, so the temperature has been going down as low as -11 degrees. He (as well as all my other cats) are outdoor cats because my brother has really bad asthema and is strongly allergic to cats. We use the cats to help our problem with ground moles. Sooo... anyone know how to re-grow hair on a cat? I do know a formula but I usually use it on my horse, so I don't know if it would be safe for a cat, or even work at all.

If it's not growing, it's probably because of the scar tissue. You can't make it grow - it either will or it won't.

Just like Pogo Peeps said...it's probably scar tissue and won't grow back. Maybe get a sweater or something for him if he has to be outside?

The thing is, if it's a scar, then the hair may or may not grow back. You're just going to have to wait and see. I'm familiar with the equine stuff to grow hair back on scars, but they work by keeping the area moist, not because they contain a chemical that makes hair grow.

If the gash was made in a certain way as to damage or gouge out the hair follicles (which is what a hair grows from and out of) then there's nothing that can be done, short of putting a dog blanket on him (which he would HATE and which would be dangerous, if he got it caught on something and tried to fight his way out of it.) I suggest making him an indoor kitty - if not at your home, then maybe someone else's. Perhaps he'd like to be a barn cat?

if it hasn't grown at all then the skin is probably too badly scarred and it may never return. Your only option would be to look into the pet boutiques to see if they have a cat coat they could wear when it gets very cold. I'm sure i have seen them.

About all I can think of is make sure your cat has plenty of vitamin-rich food and let nature take its course. And make sure the cats have a warm place to sleep.
